This data story provides information for parents, community members, and educators on how attendance, behavior, and course performance (the ABCs) in Massachusetts high schools affect post-secondary outcomes.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education collects a variety of data from schools and districts in the state. Much of the information collected is published in the School and District Profiles. A "profile" is a snapshot of the data for a specific school or district. Users can also find school and district directories.

In addition to individual profiles and directories, users can also view and download statewide data reports. The Massachusetts Education-to-Career Research and Data Hub publishes many of the statewide reports as datasets here in the public data portal. If you wish to download multiple years of data at once, multiple student groups, or other cuts of data that are more difficult to download via School and District Profiles, please search for it here in the E2C Hub.

This dataset contains provides data on student mobility since 2008. Mobility is defined as those students transferring into or out of public schools, districts, or the state. Mobility rates are not reported for enrollments of fewer than 6.

Intake rate measures the number of students that enroll in the state, a district, or school after the beginning of the school year. Churn rate measures the number students transferring into or out of a public school or district throughout the course of a school year. Stability rate measures how many students remain in a district or school throughout the school year. For further details and explanations see Information Service's Mobility Rates page.

Economically Disadvantaged was used 2015-2021. Low Income was used prior to 2015, and a different version of Low Income has been used since 2022. Please see the DESE Researcher's Guide for more information.

This dataset contains data on the number of students participating in designated Early College programs since school year 2020-21. Early College is a program that designates partnerships between high schools and colleges to support high school students to complete college courses. The list of designated partnerships is available here.

Students are counted in this dataset if they are marked as an Early College student by the district. The district also submits each student's affiliation with a single institution of higher education (IHE), though some Early College students take credits at more than one IHE. The period column allows you to filter for Fall or Spring, or to see the full-year deduplicated count of participants.

The dataset is updated after each semester, when the SIMS collection for that semester is certified.

The data here are the same as the participation data in the Early College Dashboard.

Data note: For the Fall 2021 collection, only 2 digits of the college code were stored, so college names could not be loaded. The incomplete 2-digit codes are shown in this dataset, but the college name field is blank for that collection.

This dashboard shows snapshots of individual districts and schools on a variety of indicators, including enrollment, demographics, staffing, MCAS scores, graduation rates and more.

This report includes indicators that reflect attendance data for students in Massachusetts public schools since 2018. Because the information collected has changed over time, not all indicators are available across all years.

Attendance indicators are calculated for students enrolled in grades PK-12 with at least 20 days in membership. For more information, please view the Profiles Help - About the Data page.

Massachusetts defines chronically absent as missing at least 10 percent of days enrolled (for instance, 18 days absent if enrolled for a typical school year of 180 days), regardless of the reason for the absence. Being chronically absent can have a significant impact on a student's academic progress and their ability to access the variety of academic and non-academic supports that schools provide.

Chronic absenteeism grew during the COVID-19 pandemic and, as of the 2022-23 school year, had not returned to pre-pandemic rates. For more information about chronic absence, visit the Chronic Absence and Student Attendance page.

This page provides data and reporting resources for school districts and public two-year colleges offering Career Technical Education (CTE) programs overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Laws and regulations require districts, public two-year colleges, and the state to assess the effectiveness of CTE programs through the collection of student-level performance data, and to disaggregate it for populations of students and by program. These can be used to make progress toward improving student performance.

The DARTs Staffing and Finance Report offers snapshots of district and school performance, allowing users to easily track select data elements over time, and make comparisons to the state. The data elements in each DART tool are linked to a broader strategic framework defining the characteristics of effective educational organizations and cover a broad range of district and school interests including demographic, assessment, student support, educator, financial, and achievement gap data.
