This dataset displays educator licensure data by race and ethnicity with rows for different years. It was created as part of a dashboard supporting the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's commitment to provide all students with a racially diverse and culturally responsive educator workforce.

Educator Licensure: This displays the number and percent of individuals who were issued an emergency, provisional, and initial license within the school year (September 1 to August 31).

This dataset contains provides data on student mobility since 2008. Mobility is defined as those students transferring into or out of public schools, districts, or the state. Mobility rates are not reported for enrollments of fewer than 6.

Intake rate measures the number of students that enroll in the state, a district, or school after the beginning of the school year. Churn rate measures the number students transferring into or out of a public school or district throughout the course of a school year. Stability rate measures how many students remain in a district or school throughout the school year. For further details and explanations see Information Service's Mobility Rates page.

Economically Disadvantaged was used 2015-2021. Low Income was used prior to 2015, and a different version of Low Income has been used since 2022. Please see the DESE Researcher's Guide for more information.

Mobility Rate Report

This dataset contains the full time equivalent (FTE) count and percentage of educational staff by race/ethnicity and gender employed in all Massachusetts public and charter schools and districts since 2008. The information is as of October 1st of the school year reported.

In certain years, a small number of schools or districts have failed to meet data reporting requirements. Since 2023, FTE counts and percentages for those schools and districts are reported here as null, and on Profiles as "Failed to meet data reporting requirements." Prior to 2023, these schools and districts were reported here and on Profiles as either null or 0.

This dataset displays MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) data for each test subject by race and ethnicity with rows for different years. It was created as part of a dashboard supporting the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's commitment to provide all students with a racially diverse and culturally responsive educator workforce.

MTEL Pass Rates: This displays the number of candidates (i.e., test takers) who took the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure and the percent who passed during the program year.

This dataset contains the same data that is also published in the MTEL Pass Rate table on our Educator Dashboard.

This dataset contains state-level index scores and their favorability distributions from the Views of Climate and Learning (VOCAL) survey since 2018. These scores are composite measures that summarize student responses across several content-related items.

The VOCAL survey is designed to provide information on student perceptions of school climate. There are two reports with different types of data: responses to individual items and aggregate index scaled scores that combine item responses. Favorability data and average topic scores are reported at the state level, and are not disaggregated by student group.

The Massachusetts Educator License Mapping Tool links educator licenses to courses. The current version of the mapping tool reflects several important changes from the 2018-19 pilot version, including:

• Educators with a moderate disabilities and/or severe disabilities license are considered "in-field" for all courses within the grade span and content areas for the license. (e.g. a teacher with a PreK-8 Moderate Disabilities license will be "in-field" when teaching a grade 5 math course but is considered "out-of-field" if teaching grade 4 music).


• Legacy licenses are appropriately reflected in the crosswalk.


• Some specific courses were updated with additional licensure fields deemed appropriate. (e.g. a teacher with a Business license will be "in-field" when teaching a marketing course).


• Updates to the courses that an Early Childhood or Elementary teacher is "in-field" for teaching (e.g. an Elementary teacher is not "in-field" when teaching Music).

Please note that while the mapping tool can serve as guidance to districts in considering hiring and assignment of individual educators, it does not prohibit a district from assigning an out-of-field educator to a course.

This dataset contains the number and percentage of Massachusetts public school students completing at least one arts course in grades K-12 since 2018. Arts courses are reported in the Student Course Schedule (SCS) system and align with the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework. For a full list of courses and subjects, see the Arts Course List.

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, the arts course list was updated the "Media Arts" category. In addition, a number of arts courses were reclassified from the "General Arts" category to "Visual Arts" to more closely align to the industry standard. Since 2022, courses are no longer assigned to the "General" category.

Arts Coursetaking Report

CHART is designed to assist charter schools in monitoring their progress with their Recruitment and Retention Plans which includes deliberate, specific strategies the school will use to attract, to enroll, and to retain a student population that is demographically comparable to similar grades in schools from which the charter school enrolls students. It is a pair of Excel workbooks that provide multi-school, multi-year demographic comparison data in the following categories:

CHART — Enrollment
Enrollment percentages by selected populations and race.

CHART — Indicators
Attrition percentages by grade level and selected populations/race.
Student indicator statistics, including suspensions by selected population/race.

The charter schools are graphed against comparable schools in its region, the median and first quartile of the comparison schools, and the state average. For enrollment demographic indicators, where possible, a statistically-derived "Comparison Index" is also graphed to provide a comparison figure that account for the charter school's size and fluctuations in student populations that yield natural variation in school-level enrollment figures, along with a "Gap Narrowing Target", which provides reference point for progress over time.

This report includes several indicators that reflect attendance information collected on March 1st and at the end of the selected school year for students in grades PK-12.

Attendance rate indicates the average percentage of days in attendance for students enrolled in grades PK - 12 with at least 20 days in membership.

Massachusetts defines chronically absent as missing at least 10 percent of days enrolled (for instance, 18 days absent if enrolled for a typical school year of 180 days), regardless of the reason for the absence. Being chronically absent can have a significant impact on a student's academic progress and their ability to access the variety of academic and non-academic supports that schools provide.

Chronic absenteeism grew during the COVID-19 pandemic and, as of the 2022-23 school year, had not returned to pre-pandemic rates. Almost 1 in 4 Massachusetts students missed 18 or more days of school in 2022-23. These dashboards provide information about how districts and schools in Massachusetts implemented student learning time (SLT) requirements for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) conducted a statewide survey about the number of hours students spend learning in person, remote synchronously, and remote asynchronously. This information was requested for students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 from all public school districts, including charter districts. The survey was administered twice, resulting in two similar dashboards: first in November 2020, and then again in February 2021.
