This page consolidates data on past test administrations of the MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure). Users can view detailed statistics for each cycle of administration, including numbers of test takers and pass rate summaries for each of the subject tests.

The MTEL was initiated by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in 1998 to help ensure that Massachusetts educators can communicate adequately with students, parents/guardians, and other educators and that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter of the license(s) sought.

This dataset contains the full time equivalent (FTE) count and percentage of educational staff by race/ethnicity and gender employed in all Massachusetts public and charter schools and districts since 2008. The information is as of October 1st of the school year reported.

In certain years, a small number of schools or districts have failed to meet data reporting requirements. Since 2023, FTE counts and percentages for those schools and districts are reported here as null, and on Profiles as "Failed to meet data reporting requirements." Prior to 2023, these schools and districts were reported here and on Profiles as either null or 0.

Selected Teacher Indicators: This displays the number and percent of teachers who are licensed in the subject area(s) they teach (In-Field), as well as the number and percent of teachers who have been teaching in a Massachusetts public school for at least three years (Experienced). Note: The In-Field report uses end-of-year EPIMS; the most recently available data are displayed.

Total Educators: This displays the annual number and percent of distinct educators who self-reported/identified as the selected Race/Ethnicity as of the first weekday in October of each school year. Data are further disaggregated by job classification group.

Educator Retention: This displays the number and percent of educators who were working in the same position from one school year to the next (via consecutive October EPIMS collections).

New Hires: This displays the annual number and percent of new hires in the selected Race/Ethnicities. It counts teachers who were reported as "working" in the annual October EPIMS collection who were hired on or after June 1 of the prior school year.

This dataset displays educator preparation data by race and ethnicity with rows for different years. It was created as part of a dashboard supporting the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's commitment to provide all students with a racially diverse and culturally responsive educator workforce.

Educator Preparation: This displays the number and percent of candidates who enrolled and completed their program in the program year. This is based on the individuals' furthest, or most recently reported, point in the selected program year as reported by the organization.

The Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) is an experimental data product from the US Census Bureau containing earnings outcomes and employment flows for recent graduates of partner colleges and universities. These statistics are generated by matching university transcript data with a national database of jobs. Only graduates who earn at least the annual equivalent of full-time work at the prevailing federal minimum wage and work three or more quarters in a calendar year are included.

Educator Licensure: This displays the number and percent of individuals who were issued an emergency, provisional, and initial license within the school year (September 1 to August 31).
